Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® for the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines (wrinkles)

Botulinum toxin A injections, specifically Botox® Cosmetic, have been the number one nonsurgical cosmetic procedure performed in the United States since 2003, with over 2.4 million total procedures in 2008 alone. They produce dramatic results giving one a more youthful, rested, and less wrinkled appearance. Frown and forehead lines as well as “crow’s feet” may even disappear. They work by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, thereby blocking the action of the treated muscles. They minimize or can even erase wrinkles that are caused by repetitive facial expressions, sun, and smoking.

In April 2009, Dysport®, another botulinum toxin A, was approved in the United States. Dysport® has been used in the United Kingdom since 1991. It was approved in 76 countries for therapeutic use and in 27 countries for aesthetic use. Patient exposure, as of April 2009 is estimated to be above two million single treatment cycles, representing more than 600,000 patient years of treatment.

Both Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® are natural, purified proteins that have been tested and used in millions of patients. They have been used medically to treat a variety of conditions for more than 25 years, attesting to their safety. They are quick and easy to administer with a few tiny injections that cause only minimal discomfort. The effects of Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport® last approximately three months. When they wear off, wrinkle lines will gradually revert to their pretreatment appearance.

Botox for Hyperhydidrosis (Excessive Sweating) and Migraines

Botox® injections are also effective for treating excessive sweating in any area. The most commonly treated areas are the underarms and palms. Treated patients have acheived an eighty-nine percent reduction in sweat production. Effects last for six to twelve months.

Many patients with migraines and tension headaches can also be effectively treated with Botox®.
