Restyane^®, Perlane^®, Juvederm Ultra™ and Juvederm UltraPlus™ are dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin and help smooth out wrinkles and folds on the face. They are made of hyaluronic acid, a non-animal-based substance that occurs naturally in the body. The difference between the hyaluronic fillers are the size of the gel particles. Juvederm UltraPlus™ and Perlane^® have larger gel particles compared to Juvederm Ultra™ and Restylane^®. The filler is injected directly into the skin with a very small needle. Topical or local numbing can be used to reduce any discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment, you may have some tenderness and swelling and perhaps a little redness, which usually resolves in a few days. As with any injection, bruising is always a risk. These fillers usually last for 6-8 months and more recently it has been shown that with full correction and one touch-up at 4-9 months, Restylane^® may last as long as 18 months.
