Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvéderm®Ultra Plus XC, and Belotero Balance® are dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin and help smooth out wrinkles and folds on the face. They all consist of hyaluronic acid, a non-animal based substance that occurs naturally in the body. The difference between the hyaluronic fillers is the size of the gel particles. Juvéderm®Ultra PlusXC and Perlane-L® have larger gel particles compared to Belotero Balance® and Restylane-L®. (We always use the “L” forms when available because the numbing agent, lidocaine, makes the filler virtually painless. Fillers are injected directly into the skin with a very small needle. Topical or local numbing can also be used to reduce any discomfort associated with the injection itself. You may have some tenderness and swelling and perhaps a little redness after the treatment. This usually resolves in a few days. As with any injection, bruising is always a risk.
Perlane-L®, Voluma™, Juvéderm®Ultra PlusXC are used more for volume replacement and last approximately 18 to 24 months. Restylane-L® is used to enhance the lips, wrinkles around the mouth, hollows under the eyes, and other superficial fine lines. Belotero® can be injected directly into fine to moderate wrinkles.
Radiesse® is used to provide fullness and to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles, folds, and depressions. It is a good option for people who have lost fullness in their face due to aging or medication and want immediate correction. It consists of calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier, which is a biocompatible, biodegradable material. It is the same composition as the mineral portion of bone and teeth. Radiesse® is injected directly into the skin with a very small needle. Topical or local numbing is used to reduce any discomfort during the treatment. After the treatment, you may have some redness, tenderness and swelling, which will resolve in a few days. As with any injection, bruising is always a risk. Radiesse® results can last up to a year or more for many patients. Individual results depend on age, skin type, lifestyle and how quickly your body metabolizes the material.
Sculptra® poly-L-lactic acid was approved as a dermal filler in 2004 in the United States. It increases the thickness of the skin and can be used to treat severe hollowness cause by lipoatrophy or certain medications. Within 2 days of injection, the patient looks as though nothing was done, but over the next 4-6 weeks natural collagen production is stimulated resulting in a more gradual correction. Many patients prefer Sculptra® not only due to its gradual correction, but also because it lasts approximately 2 years with some effects lasting up to four years.
