Sclerotherapy and the Laser Treatment of Leg Veins

Treatment for Telangiectasia (spider veins) of the Legs

There are two methods available for effective treatment of telangiectasia (small spider veins).

  • One procedure, sclerotherapy, involves the injection of a sclerosing agent into the offending veins, often causing them to vanish within 4 to 12 weeks.  Inflammation induced within the walls of the blood vessels ultimately destroys them.  The number and severity of the vessels and response to the sclerosing agent determine the number of treatments required.

  • The second method uses one of two lasers specifically designed for the treatment of leg veins.   Smaller, red or blue vessels may be treated with the pulsed dye laser.  The laser light is absorbed by the blood within the blood vessel and the surrounding skin remains unaffected though there may be some temporary hyperpigmentation (increased pigmentation).  After treatment with this laser, vessels may appear dark purple, grey, or black(bruised) and may initially feel somewhat sore.

The type of treatment chosen is individualized and determined by the number, size, and configuration of your veins, as well as your skin color and the amount of sun to which you are exposed.

Treatment for Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are larger, more tortuous, and bluer than spider veins.  They may cause significant discomfort.  Most varicose veins can be treated with sclerotherapy with excellent results.
